Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of York Living Cost ("the Service"), operated by Freedom Engineers ("we," "our," or "us"). By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms.

1. Service Description

York Living Cost provides estimated cost-of-living calculations for municipalities in York Region, Ontario. The Service includes a cost calculator, listing scanner, and optional weekly alerts. All estimates are based on publicly available data and are provided for informational purposes only.

2. Not Financial Advice

York Living Cost is not a financial advisor, real estate agent, or mortgage broker. The information provided by this Service does not constitute financial, legal, tax, or real estate advice. All cost estimates are approximate and based on public open data sources. You should consult a licensed professional before making any financial decisions, including but not limited to purchasing, renting, or investing in real estate.

3. Data Accuracy

We make reasonable efforts to ensure data accuracy by sourcing from official public databases (York Region, Statistics Canada, CMHC, Ontario Energy Board, Metrolinx). However, we do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any information. Property tax rates, utility costs, transit fares, and market prices change frequently. Always verify figures with the relevant authority or a licensed professional.

Listing data is currently demonstrative (mock data). When live listing feeds are integrated, they will be sourced from licensed APIs only — we do not scrape any website.

4. Accounts

You may create an account using Google OAuth or email/password. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account credentials. You must provide accurate information when creating an account. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

5. Subscriptions & Payments

The free tier provides access to the True Cost Calculator. Paid subscriptions ("Shield Pro") provide additional features including weekly alerts, full dashboard, and saved searches.

  • Monthly plan: $30 CAD/month
  • Yearly plan: $299 CAD/year

Payments are processed by Stripe. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. You may cancel at any time from your Settings page or Stripe customer portal. Refunds are available within 30 days of initial purchase — contact us to request one.

6. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose
  • Scrape, crawl, or programmatically extract data from the Service without permission
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or user accounts
  • Resell or redistribute data obtained from the Service
  • Misrepresent our estimates as official financial advice

7. Intellectual Property

The Service, including its design, code, and original content, is owned by Freedom Engineers. Public data used in calculations remains in the public domain. You may share calculator results for personal use but may not reproduce the Service itself.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, York Living Cost and Freedom Engineers shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service or reliance on any information provided. This includes, without limitation, financial losses from real estate decisions made based on our estimates.

9. Availability

We strive to keep the Service available at all times but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time without notice. Paid subscribers will be notified of material changes and may request a prorated refund if the Service is discontinued.

10. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Ontario.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated to registered users via email. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
