York Living Cost ("we," "our," or "us") operates the website yorklivingcost.ca. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our service.

1. Information We Collect

Account information: When you create an account, we collect your name and email address. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email, and profile picture from Google.

Profile data: You may optionally provide household income, monthly budget, number of dependents, preferred cities, and rent/buy preference. This data is used solely to personalize your experience.

Usage data: We collect anonymous usage data such as pages visited, calculator inputs, and feature usage to improve the service. We do not track you across other websites.

Payment information:Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your credit card number, bank account, or other payment details on our servers. Stripe's privacy policy governs their handling of your payment data.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide and personalize the cost calculator and listing scanner
  • Send weekly listing alerts if you opt in
  • Process subscription payments
  • Improve the accuracy of our cost estimates
  • Respond to support requests

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.

3. Data Sources

Cost estimates are derived from public open data sources including York Region municipal records, Statistics Canada, CMHC, Ontario Energy Board rate schedules, and Metrolinx fare tables. Listing data is currently mock/demo data and will be replaced with licensed API feeds (Houski, CREA DDF, or Repliers) in the future. We do not scrape any website.

4. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely on Supabase (hosted on AWS in the US-East-2 region) with row-level security policies. All connections use TLS encryption. We follow industry standard practices to protect your information, but no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

5. Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication (session management). We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies. Analytics, if added in the future, will be privacy-respecting and disclosed here.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Supabase — authentication and database hosting
  • Stripe — payment processing
  • Resend — transactional email delivery
  • Vercel — website hosting
  • Google OAuth — optional sign-in

Each service has its own privacy policy governing their use of your data.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access, update, or delete your account data at any time via Settings
  • Export your data upon request
  • Opt out of alert emails at any time
  • Request deletion of your account by contacting us

If you are an Ontario resident, you have additional rights under PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act).

8. Children's Privacy

York Living Cost is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify registered users of material changes via email. The "last updated" date at the top reflects the most recent revision.
